Mapping Brain Variability in Human Populations. Just as faces differ among different individuals, brain structure varies even among normal individuals, and even more so in disease. This map displays the magnitude and principal directions of anatomical variability in the brain, based on a group of 40 normal subjects scanned with MRI. Pink colors indicate brain regions with large anatomical variability across subjects, blue colors low variability. The ellipsoidal glyphs are elongated along directions in which variation is greatest. The nested, transparent glyphs represent the probabilities of different anatomical variations, and are used to detect abnormal anatomical differences in Alzheimer's Disease. These maps help distinguish pathological changes from normal variations.

Please allow extra time to get through the security clearance.

Public Transportation
The Washington D.C. Metrorail system has a station on the NIH campus called "Medical Center". Upon exiting the station, it is a short walk to the NIH Gateway Center.
Metrorail service is available from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and from Union Station (railway). Take Metro's Red Line to the Medical Center station.
For more information, visit Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority

The Natcher Conference Center (Building 45) is located on the NIH main campus. Visitor parking is limited, so take public transportation if possible. The campus is located on the Red Line at the Medical Center
Metro stop. Upon exiting the station, it is a short walk to the NIH Gateway Center. The Natcher Conference Center is located a short distance behind the Gateway Center.

If you must drive, take the Wisconsin Avenue exit from the Capital Beltway (Interstate Route 495) and go about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) south on Wisconsin Avenue toward Bethesda, staying in the right lane. Do not turn onto South Drive, instead go another approximately three-tenths of a mile (500 meters) and turn right onto "NIH Gateway Drive". This one-way road leads directly to the Gateway Center Vehicle Inspection Station. The Natcher Building is at 45 Center Drive and is located across from the National Library of Medicine (Buildings 38 and 38A). See for more information.

The estimated fare (one-way) from the three local airports to Natcher are:

  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA): $55
  • Dulles International Airport (IAD): $55
  • Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI): $75

Please note: Taxis must go through vehicle campus security, so allow at least an additional 20 minutes at the vehicle security checkpoint. To save time, you can request that the taxi driver drop you off at the Gateway Center security checkpoint.
